This brings up an important issue for unions (and website owners) everywhere. How safe is the server your website is built on? Can your site be hijacked in such a fashion? Are you prepared for internet attacks on your server?
For most of us, the server computer is a far away thing. A stripped down "Linux box" sitting on a rack in some air conditioned room in some unassuming part of the country (or world). We may occasionally talk with contract developers when we need some work done for us server-side, but that's about the extent of our dealings with the deep tech behind the seductively easy-to-use interfaces that the web presents us as viewers.
However, it's important to be aware of these potential security threats, and be very aware that specific attacks can be launched by the corporations (and even government agencies) that unions face off against at the bargaining table at any time.
So it's worth the time and money to ask the people that run your website's server "how is our security?" And if they are not clear, ask them to explain as simply as possible in layperson's terms.
We'd be interested to hear from labor folks about any security horror stories they may have to share with us, and any specific suggestions people have about how to make labor's web presence more secure. We'll plan to cover some must-do security solutions in future posts.
