Union officials "condone and endorse" attacks on members' internet free speech!

Union officials "condone and endorse" attacks on members' internet free speech

By Matt Noyes

Since the first member forum caught their attention, some union leaders have tried to put a lid on member free speech online. They haven't had much success. Internet free speech has spread like a weed, with independent member-run websites, blogs, and forums popping up in all the unions. Many union leaders probably share the frustration expressed by IBEW International Vice President Phil Flemming, "while we do not condone or endorse the use of independently operated websites...as places for members to express their opinions, there is little we can do to stop them."

Teachers Union insurgent campaign video

Kit Wainer, a friend from New York, is running for President of the United Federation of Teachers on the ICE/TJC slate . He has put out a campaign video.

Smart to shoot it in a classroom, as the incumbent was union attorney before becoming president and Wainer is a veteran teacher. Would be better if he did less reading of the cure cards behind the camera, Kit is very articulate and logical. Also would be better if the video was posted on youtube (easier to embed and access), but content is crucial and this video is long on content.

In a union that embraced democracy, the official union website would host candidate blogs and videos. The UFT does publish candidate statements in the union newspaper.

An example of how a union uses YouTube to communicate with its members ... and of how to display a YouTube video on your local web site.

Great idea: slideshow on home page

I found this slideshow on the website of Local 370 Voice, a rank-and-file reform site for members of UBCJA (Carpenters) Local 370 in New York State.

Nice technique: it provides a kind of introduction to the website and its mission.

Newspaper Guild President Linda Foley at Media Reform Conference

I'm at the National Conference on Media Reform where I attended a panel called "Strike Out: Dropping the Ball on Labor." President of the Newspaper Guild, Linda Foley, was one of the panelists. She has a great deal to say about the battles currently facing labor when it comes to breaking the corporate media blockade. Sadly, there was little said about how labor doesn't necessarily need the major media to get their message out and about how they can chart their own course via the World Wide Web. While the panel was well attended there is a serious lack of labor leadership at this conference.

Video is on the Workers Independent News site. All together it is roughly 15 minutes.

Labour website of the year 2007

LabourStart, the news and campaigning website of the international trade union movement, is pleased to announce the launch of the 10th annual Labour Website of the Year competition.

Every year since 1997, trade unionists from around the world have voted to select their favorite union websites. Last year's winner was the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) in the U.K. Previous winners have come from Canada, Australia, India and the USA.

Every union website is eligible to win, and every trade union member can vote. Voting ends on 31 January 2007 when the top 10 union websites in the world will be announced.

To cast your vote, go to:

Spread the word!

You can once again "Shop Union Made" this holiday

After being shut down for a long period due to a lack of funding, the ShopUnionMade.org website is open for business. Finally, consumers sensitive about the working conitions of those who manufacture the products they buy can again educate themselves about which products have earned the union label.

Open Source: union officer debates online

More on this later, but this is a good trend -- well not yet a trend, but good initiatives: videotaped union officer election debates. Youtube and google video make it easy to get this out to members and the public.

Locked out Alcatraz ferry workers fight back online and on the picket line

On September 25th of 2006 Alcatraz Cruises, part of the notoriously anti-union Hornblower Yachts, took over the contract to run the Alcatraz ferry service using non union crews for the first time since the service began in the early 70's.

Open Source: UFCW reform manifesto

I have argued here, without a lot of success, that we should think of "open source" unionism not only in terms of union leaders bringing in new categories of members, or taking on broader social issues, but also in terms of making the union's own "source code" and "architecture" open to the members.

Open Source: Unions and Creative Commons?

A question about best practices for official union websites:

Should an official union website be under a creative commons license (share alike, attribution, non-commercial, etc.)?
