Next Internet Revolution: Live Streaming Video for the Masses (and Unions, Hopefully)

You've got a blog, posted a couple of podcasts and some videos on YouTube, now get ready for the next hot way to communicate: live streaming video. You heard it here first. A new company, less than 1/2 year old, called Ustream, offers live video streams to anyone who wants one, absolutely free. I've set one up and coupled it with a live chat feature for my company, Prometheus, and I absolutely love it.

Democracy and Access Control

In a recent article for Union Democracy Review, Herman Benson and I reported on the struggle by Operating Engineers union members to maintain open access to their independent websites. (Operating Engineers defend their internet rights). -- Richard Dorrough posted about this case before.

Unique credit card

Hello,

Thought you may be interested in this since it's about the Union Plus Credit Card designed for union members.

Please check out the Credit Bloggers blog post about the Union Plus Credit Card, "A CoBranded Card That Makes The Grade". It’s up on Credit Bloggers at:

http://www.creditbloggers.com/2007/04/a_cobranded_cre.html

The post is by Gerri Detweiler, a highly respected consumer educator and advocate, who calls our program a "good guy" example that "should be the standard, not the exception" for affinity credit cards.

Feel free to reference this on your blog or other channels – and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks.

"Internet Teacher Unionists: What Does The Future Hold?"

Interesting post by Dr. Homeslice, a teacher and AFT member:

"...Beginning over ten years ago, many local teachers’ unions began to go online, hosting a web page and keeping contact with their membership online. As older, less tech savvy teachers retire, newer teachers who have grown up with the internet as an indispensable part of their lives are beginning to take leadership roles within their organizations and they’re using technology in a way that hasn’t been seen, especially with the advent of Web 2.0."

The graduate employees union GESO at Yale university has put together a great video on one of their key issues. Check this out and think about how your union could use video.

Labor's Voices Conference, April 26 through 28

In a couple of weeks, I'm headed down to the Big Apple for the Labor's Voices conference. The LV events are all about helping worker's take advantage of media to deliver their message and organize a movement. Definitely check it out and get to New York if you can!

A site that has it right: CIW

I got an email about a Coalition of Immokalee Workers event in Chicago and clicked on the link to their website. I knew about their work, and have met CIW members and organizers, but hadn't seen their site before; it's great, a real model of an action-oriented website.

Operating Engineers Move to Silence Member Web Sites

In a blatant attempt to control members from building rank and file web sites the IUOE has written bylaws to curb its members free speech rights. The information is posted below and can be found here:

IAM Starts YouTube-based News Network

Using YouTube's free channel feature, a union can set up their own MySpace-like page full of videos, giving any organization the power to cheaply distribute their collection of videos. The IAM has capitalized on this feature and has set up the Machinists News Network.

Basic Blog Has Big Impact for SEIU

Using Google's free blog service, SEIU has launched a blog about the Blackstone private equity firm's IPO at Inside the Blackstone IPO and landed an article in the New York Times about it.

It goes to prove that the Internet can give you quite a large voice for very little money.

Unofficial sites lead way in Teachers election

Once again the unofficial, rank-and-file side of the labor internet is leading the way. In the current election in the UFT (Local 2 of the AFT), two opposition groups -- Independent Community of Educators and Teachers for a Just Contract (ICE-TJC) -- have formed a joint slate to take on the ruling Unity Caucus and its partner, New Action.
