How could SEIU's Unite to Win blog be improved?

Last November, SEIU launched the "Unite to Win" web site featuring a blog by its President, Andy Stern, making them the first American international union to dialogue with the public on the Internet. Stern's decision to start a blog was a great public relations strategy for his cause and it demonstrates that he has a much better grasp of the Internet's communicative powers than most other union leaders. However, SEIU's technical implementation and the administrative policies (or lack thereof) that govern the blog have problems that should be addressed if it is to become a model for other unions to follow.

Web company open sources proprietary Drupal code

The echoditto web development company, best known in labor circles for their work on SEIU's PurpleOcean.org site as reported here last month, recently announced they are releasing some of their Drupal modules to the open source community for free download. Only two modules are currently available at http://opensource.echoditto.com/ but the company's blog says they will be releasing more modules soon.

DC AFL-CIO reports on convention

Washington DC AFL-CIO labor council staff member Chris Garlock has been sending reports back from Chicago to http://www.dclabor.org. Technically not a blog, Garlock offers more straight-laced, formal style of journalism.

AFL-CIO to webcast Sweeney keynote live from the convention floor

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney will have his keynote address webcast live on the Internet tomorrow. This information comes by way of the AFL-CIO's "Working Families e-Activist" e-mail alert sent out just before 3pm today. Unfortunately, the e-mail does not contain details on the time or the url for viewing the webcast. Best bet is to check the offical AFL-CIO convention site early tomorrow or sign up for an alert.

Another blogger enters the AFL-CIO convention fray

Another blog chronicaling the AFL-CIO convention has been spotted at http://cnylaboraflcio.blogspot.com/. It's unclear who the blogger is, but my best guest is that it's Marshall Blake, President of the Central New York Labor Council. Update: I missed a big clue in the upper left of the site which gives the e-mail address of "mark@cnylabor.org." So I now think the blog entries are likely the work of field coordinator, Mark Spadafore. All postings to the blog are made with the pseudonym "unionmark." If anyone our there has any definitive information on who it is, please let the CoD community know by posting a comment below.

Blogger beats mainstream media on breaking AFL-CIO convention news

Jonathan Tasini, a labor blogger and former president of the National Writer's Union, has been the first to press with breaking news from the AFL-CIO in convention. This is yet another example of how blogs and independent journalism are transforming the media landscape.

AFL-CIO offers breaking convention news by e-mail

The AFL-CIO is offering e-mail updates on the convention at http://www.unionvoice.org/wfean/conventionsignup.html. In an email sent through its Working Families, the AFL-CIO says the e-mail alerts will allow subscribers to get breaking news about the convention "before it hits the newspapers or the blogs." The AFL-CIO also has established many pages on their web site about the convention which begins Monday. They can be viewed at http://www.aflcio.org/aboutus/thisistheaflcio/convention/2005/.

AFL-CIO revamps web site, improvements largely cosmetic

The AFL-CIO has revamped its web site in time for the upcoming convention. Anyone expecting an embrace of new and interactive web technologies by America's largest federation of unions will be disappointed, however. Amazingly, the site still lacks an RSS feed for news. It also lacks a feature for facilitating any kind of two-way, online dialogue. One interesting change is that President John Sweeney has a column featured on the front page. You might be tempted to call it a blog, however, it lacks any blog features and its tone does not have the breezy, personal feel that characterizes the blog genre of writing.

Oregon AFL-CIO top officer will blog about AFL-CIO convention

Tim Nesbitt, President of the Oregon AFL-CIO, will be blogging about the AFL-CIO's convention in Chicago. Nesbitt made his first entry into his blog yesterday, July 20. See http://oregonaflcio.blogspot.com/.

Debate about the future of the AFL-CIO heats up on the Internet

With the AFL-CIO convention in Chicago just ten days away, more powerful AFL-CIO leaders are moving their debate away from microphones, cameras, and board rooms and placing them onto the Internet. SEIU's Executive Vice President, Tom Woodruff, entered the fray today with this scathing riposte to IAM President Tom Buffenbarger's July 5th memo on SEIU's "Change to Win" blog. This comes on top of a recent entry by Steelworkers' President Tom Gerard on labor blogger Jonathan Tasini's site that I mentioned earlier today.

Leo Gerard, Steelworkers President, engages in a blog-based debate

Steelworkers President, Leo Gerard, has entered into a debate with labor blogger Jonathan Tasini. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only instance of an International president taking part in a public forum/blog debate. Of course, SEIU's Stern has his own blog but I've never seen him actually debate anyone there.

Union Podcast from CT AFT is First in Nation

I was searching in the iTunes Music Store podcast section for other labor podcasts and found only one: from the Connecticut AFT that claims to be the first in the nation. I see no reason to doubt this.

Technorati: A New Public Utility

Some readers may have noticed the green "Technorati" link at the bottom of the right hand column and wondered what it's all about. Well, here's a good item from Wired News to help explain:

Welcome to Hel-Mart, Aisle 666

Grassroots anti-Wal-Mart web sites are sprouting up like crabgrass all over Wal-Mart's think, green, profitable lawn. One of the more eye-catching ones is brought to you by Hel-Mart. It's humorous and its graphics make an indelible impression even on the casual passerby. The creators of the site make money by selling American made t-shirts with anti-Wal-Mart messages. Definitely check it out. It's another example of how the Internet gives individuals and organizations with good ideas the power to create change and take part of a national debate---and make a little cash, too.
